YNPN of OKC Announces Plans for Growth

“Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning.” - Benjamin Franklin
When the Oklahoma City chapter of YNPN was first forming in the fall of 2012, the startup committee volunteers weren’t sure what it would eventually look like. Each chapter can make their own choices about programming, tax-exempt status, funding sources, and membership requirements. We got inspiration from other chapters, but we knew we’d need to forge our own path. (If you’d like to learn more about our relationship with YNPN National, review this slideshow.)
The startup committee decided that we wanted to start building our network as soon as possible and then let that network direct our growth. We felt that OKC was ready for this new resource and we were right. Our first social event was held just 16 months ago on March 4, 2013. Thirty-five people showed up and we knew we were on our way! That September, we were promoted from ‘startup’ to official active chapter status.
networking1Today, YNPN of OKC is a vibrant organization with more than 1,000 “Likes” on Facebook, over 450 Twitter followers, and an email list of close to 400. We’ve had an event nearly every month and gotten great feedback. We’ve learned that you can get a lot done with the contributions of a volunteer board and two great committees. We’ve been good at keeping things cheap and simple, but it’s time to take this organization to the next level. It’s time to introduce paid membership. With just a little income from dues, we know that we can provide you with even better programming and events.
We’ve listened! Many of you have told us that you want to feel more involved and more connected to the organization. Now you can proudly identify yourself as a YNPN of OKC member and have access to members-only information and events.

Now don’t get worried!

We know of other professional organizations that charge hundreds for dues, but our board believes it is very important that we stay accessible to everyone. Dues are just $25 for a one-year membership. If you’re a full-time student or participating in a service year program like Teach for America or Americorps, your dues will be discounted to $20. We don’t want to exclude anyone because of money, so we are making scholarships available based on need. Click here to apply now for a scholarship.
We are setting up a secure online form so you can easily pay your dues but it’s not quite ready yet. Make sure you’re on our mailing list so we can notify you next week when it is ready to go.
Meanwhile, the board is working to expand our list of member benefits. If you know of a business that would like to partner with YNPN and offer a discount or promotion to our members, please let us know.

What's In Store

This could be YOU! This could be YOU!
On September 18, (Edit: On a date which will be announced very soon!) we will have a celebration for all of our members at the Oklahoma City Zoo. Make sure you pay your dues because you really don’t want to miss this fun event. We’ll provide drinks, appetizers, and the chance to mingle with all your nonprofit peers… AND stingrays!
Thank you for sticking with us through our first year. We’ve come a long way and we look forward to continuing to grow with your support.
